Work Related Illness and Injury Leave (WRIIL) for Government Employees in India – Rule 44

Work Related Illness and Injury Leave (WRIIL) is a special leave provision under CCS (Leave) Rules, 1972 to protect government employees who suffer illness or injury due to or aggravated by official duties. It ensures financial security and medical support during recovery.


1. Eligibility

  • Applicable to all government servants (permanent or temporary).
  • Leave is granted only when illness or injury is attributable to or aggravated in the performance of official duties or due to official position.
  • Governed by sub-rule (1) of Rule 19 of CCS (Leave) Rules, 1972.

WRIIL ensures that employees are not financially penalized due to work-related injuries or illness.


3. Interaction with Other Laws

  • For employees covered under the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1923, the leave salary under WRIIL is reduced by the amount of compensation paid under the Act.

4. Leave Account Treatment

  • No Earned Leave (EL) or Half Pay Leave (HPL) is credited during the period the employee is on WRIIL.
  • The leave period is special and separate from normal leave entitlements.
